 Recent Reads and Reviews

It has been a long time since I gave book reviews, and a crazy long time since those reviews were on my blog. That desperately needs to be fixed, so below are some of the books I read over the course of late summer. These reviews contain a brief overview of the book, the content warnings (I'll try to be specific), spice level (I consider kissing one pepper, and open door spicy scenes five peppers), and an overall rating (all of which are out of five stars). So, without further ado, let's dive right in!

Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter: This is the story of a teenage girl, who lost her mother when she was young and now has to deal with all the milestones of graduation without her mom by her side. It is a rom-com, but it was a lot deeper than the average one I have read. Overall, it was a very sweet story, and I enjoyed it. (I did buddy read this, which may have made me enjoy it more than I otherwise would have.)

Content Warnings: Mostly moderate cussing, suggestive comments, underaged drinking (the main character does not join)

Spice Level: ðŸŒ¶️🌶️

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I Hope This Doesn't Find You by Ann Liang: This book is about a teenage girl who is fighting for the position of "Top Student" with a boy in her class. He has done nothing but terrorize her for years, and she has let her rage towards him out in hundreds of emails. Emails that she never meant to send...but she did. This story was incredibly cute and pretty clean.

Content Warnings: Mild cussing, suggestive comments, underage drinking (the main character does get drunk)

Spice Level: ðŸŒ¶️🌶️

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons: Tessa has become blind after a car accident. Weston is a boy who has been crippled since childhood. As Tessa is battling her despair, Weston offers her a light she can't deny even blind. THIS IS THE BEST ROMANCE I HAVE EVER READ! It attacked the victimhood mentality of our culture, and was REAL romance and NOT lust.

Content Warnings: Mild cussing

Spice Level: ðŸŒ¶️

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard: In a world divided by the color of your blood, reds bow before the god-like silvers. Until, one day, a red appears with the power of the silvers. Someone who can uproot their order. This is a good, classic fantasy but maybe a little overhyped.

Content Warnings: Suggestive comments, violence, alcohol consumption

Spice Level: ðŸŒ¶️🌶️

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Six Days: The Age of the Earth and the Decline of the Church by Ken Ham: This non-fiction book goes over why the church is falling apart as it continues to refuse to take Genesis at it's word. I enjoyed this book as I enjoy theology, but it only really argued on the offensive and didn't give many points to support its own stance.

Content Warnings: This is a little hard since it's non-fiction. The title explains the topic and there is no cussing.

Spice Level: No spice

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo: This is book two of the Six of Crows series, and it continued to follow the journey of Kaz and his crew. Only now, they are on their own turf and have to battle the gang bosses and politicians that want this band of criminals in the stocks. Honestly, I wouldn't suggest reading this book because of the sheer amount of content, but it is well written and an engaging story. BUT bear in mind that it is very dark and deals like a lot of heavier trauma.

Content Warnings: Severe cussing, homosexuality, sexual comments, sexual abuse (this does include quick flashes of what one of the characters faced from men during her time as a slave in a brothel; though these moments are fast, infrequent, and do not show the sex aspect of it), human trafficking, violence, abuse, gambling, alcohol consumption, drugs (fantasy version, not real world), and gore.

Spice Level: ðŸŒ¶️🌶️🌶️

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

The Hunger Games by Suzanna Collins: When Prim is selected for the Hunger Games, Katniss wastes no time in volunteering to take her place. She is then launched into a fight against other teens and tweens for survival. There can only be one winner. The rest must die. Honestly, if you didn't already know all that about The Hunger Games you might be living under a rock.

Content Warnings: Alcohol consumption, human trafficking, mild gore, violence

Spice Level:🌶️

Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐
