Book Review
There was a novel that came out recently titled Wings of Starlight by Allison Saft. It is based on the romance between Queen Clarion and Lord Milori that was mentioned in the Disney Tinker Bell movies. This is my in depth review of the novel. *SPOILER WARNING*
Plot Review: In this novel, children’s nightmares have created demon-like creatures who wander Pixie Hollow. They were sealed away for years, but have broken loose and are reigning havoc on the fairies. Queen Clarion has to find a way to stop them as her coronation approaches. Lord Milori teams up with her to do just that. In their pursuit to stop these monsters, they fall in love, but have to face the reality that summer and winter fairies cannot mix.
Honestly, I thought this plot had too little twists. I could call everything that was going to happen way before it did. This kept me from getting very attached to the story.
Plot Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Character Review: There are five primary characters in this novel. First is Queen Clarion. Her goal is to be a worthy ruler and her fear is that she will fail to be the queen she needs to be. I was not impressed with her as a character. In recent storytelling, most lead female characters have had the exact same personality, and she was no exception. Hence, she fell very flat.
The second was Lord Milori. His original goal was to protect his people and his fear was to fail to do that, same as Clarion. Then he met Clarion, and his entire personality became his obsession with her. It was kinda frustrating to tell the truth.
Third was Elvina. She was the Queen who trained Clarion to be the next ruler. There were elements to her backstory that added a lot of interest to her choices, even though the motives were never bluntly explained. Her personality was well developed, and I thought she was very interesting.
The fourth primary character was Petra. She was a tinker with a quirky vibe that reminded me of Tinker Bell if she got mixed with Clank from the Tinker Bell movies.
The final primary character was Artemis. She was an engaging character; however, she rarely speaks. And the main characters don’t push her too, so she was never fully developed.
Character Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Ending Review (Largest SPOILER WARNING): In the end, Clarion and Milori cannot be together and are forced to separate. Given how deeply in love they were, I expected their separation to be more desperate. It was a little cold, and I thought that more emotion could have been incorporated.
I also wanted to see Elvina leave Pixie Hollow. It was repeatedly mentioned how she would have to, but that was never shown.
Those were my only two complaints with the ending though, and beyond that it was satisfying. It just wasn’t the best it could have been.
Ending Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
