Lord of the Rings: Random Facts

Before I begin today’s post, I’d just like to mention that Story Anchor is currently holding her first poetry contest! If you’d like to submit all you have to do is write a clean poem that is at least ten lines long. Once you’ve done that just join the email list and send me your poem!

I hope to see your submission amid the others that are coming in!

Now without further ado, let’s dive in!

. . . . .

Fluffy, tiny nose, adorable paws, Sauron was once a cat. Known now as the Dark Lord, who tried to take over Middle Earth twice, that’s not what he was originally. So let’s go back in time, through drafts, to see who Sauron used to be.

In the original Beren and Luthien, before it was later changed through drafting, Beren, a Gnome, went to steal the Silmaril from Morgoth also known as Melkor. Upon being captured, Beren was forced to work for Tevildo, Morgoth’s pet cat.

Tevildo was the Prince of Cats, all cats had been enchanted by Melkor. Servant of darkness, at the right hand of Morgoth, sound familiar?

In later versions of the story, Tevildo was changed to Thû the ‘great chief’ of Melkor. Thû became the Necromancer and was Lord of Wolves. Tevildo’s cat nation had all but faded away.

At last, Sauron emerged in the last drafts, taking the place of Thû. This is the Dark Lord that we are all familiar with.

Tevildo and Thû did not make it into the published works, but interestingly the Great Eye we see during Lord of the Rings does have a cat-like look to it. Whether that was intentional or an accident I don’t know.

If you’d like to read more about Tevildo, you can get the novel by Christopher Tolkien, Beren and Luthien, which still includes the mostly unknown Tevildo in the place of Sauron.

Well there you have it, Sauron used to be a cat. If anyone ever asks you for a random fact about Middle Earth, just tell them Morgoth had a pet cat.
