The Dream of a CIA Agent
The Dream of a CIA Agent
"Agent 443! Stand up please!" The head of the CIA spoke loudly. Julia stood up slowly. She was not expecting this, and she meekly responded, stuttering.
"Y-y-yes sir?"
"You have officially been a part of this agency for 10 years now, yes?" She swallowed hard.
"Yes."
"And how would you like to be promoted?"
"Wow! I don't know, sir. I think that's up to you." He took a breath and sighed sitting back in his chair.
"Yes, indeed. I've given this a lot of thought and you will be promoted." His serious face turned into a huge smile. Julia gasped. She had never been promoted. Her breath caught and a lump formed in her throat. She nodded quickly and walked out of the room. Once she was in her car, the happy tears fell and she flashed back to her childhood.
It all started as a young child. Her parents asked her at 5 what she wanted to be when she grew up, and she told them a CIA agent. She stuck with that her whole life, taking her years in middle and high school to study every chance she could get. In college she worked harder than anyone else, so that she could get into the CIA.
This year was her 10 year anniversary. She was 34 and really enjoyed her job. She still couldn't believe she had been promoted. She was not just another analyst anymore. She was in charge of a crew now. She had been hoping for a promotion for a few years. She called her parents right away. They were overjoyed. After that, she called her husband. She had been married to a man named Jeff for 5 years. They had a 4 year old boy, too.
"Will you have to work more often?" He asked her over the phone.
"I'm not sure. I'll have to ask. I'm going back to work in a minute. I just needed a few moments by myself."
"Alright, talk to you later." They said their goodbyes and hung up. She went back in and knocked on her boss' office door. He looked up from his paperwork.
"Yes?"
"Hello sir-" He interrupted her, "I'm no longer your boss. We are now co-workers. You can call me Bill." He gave her a small smile. She returned it.
"Well, Bill, I had a few questions about the new management job."
"OK. Go ahead."
"Will this take up more time than being an analyst?"
"It shouldn't. In fact, it should take less time."
"Excellent! Will I have to work more days?"
"No more than you do already."
"Oh great!"
"Why don't you go home early. There's nothing for you to do. Enjoy your day but be back here at your normal time."
"Thanks!" She skipped off! "Have a good night!"
"You too!" That night she enjoyed her evening and got a good night's rest, imagining how much she would love her new job!
